INTENSE PULSE LIGHT

What is Intense Pulse Light (IPL)?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a well-studied, Health Canada approved, treatment for dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis and ocular rosacea.

Through controlled light pulses of specific wavelengths, this technology targets the inflamed blood vessels of the eyelids. This will significantly reduce inflammation along the meibomian glands. IPL enables oil-producing glands to better lubricate the eyes, and significantly reduces dry eye symptoms.

Intense Pulse Light treatment is best for those with ocular rosacea, moderate to advanced meibomian gland dysfunction, and blepharitis (demodex, mites and styes/chalazions). Based on the underlying condition, our optometrists may recommend Zest treatment and/or LLLT treatments in conjunction with IPL to get the best results..

Pricing: $200/treatment (most dry eye conditions require 3-4 sessions)

HOW IS INTENSE PULSE LIGHT USED TO TREAT DRY EYES?

  • Reduction of Blood Vessels: IPL specifically targets the small, dilated blood vessels (telangiectasias) commonly observed in blepharitis and rosacea. The absorbed light energy induces coagulation and collapse of these blood vessels, resulting in a reduction of redness and visible blood vessels, leading to a more uniform skin tone.

  • Decreased Inflammation: IPL contributes to the alleviation of skin inflammation by penetrating the skin's surface and being absorbed by the targeted tissues. This process helps mitigate the inflammatory response, thereby reducing swelling and discomfort associated with blepharitis and rosacea.

  • Collagen Stimulation: IPL therapy has the potential to boost collagen production in the skin. Collagen, a crucial protein for skin structure and elasticity, can be enhanced through IPL, promoting improvements in skin texture and overall skin health. This, in turn, may alleviate the severity of symptoms related to blepharitis and rosacea.

  • Non-Invasive Procedure: IPL is a non-invasive treatment option, eliminating the need for surgical incisions. The application of light pulses externally to the skin ensures a safe and relatively painless procedure.
